Description

Background: According to the World Health Organization, the proportion of older adults (60 years and above) is expected to double from 12% - 22% between 2015 and 2050. Global healthcare systems face serious issues due to this demographic shift, especially in low and middle-income countries where resources are low and inadequate. This study examined the accessibility and usability of health facilities in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region, Ghana.
Methods: The study was quantitative using a cross-sectional design. Data was collected from 186 respondents using a structured questionnaire, and analyzed using Stata Windows 16. Univariate and multiple regression analyses were performed to establish factors influencing satisfaction with health facilities. Statistical significance for all testing was set at 0.05.
Results: Accessibility of entrance ramps or lifts was rated as poor (54.30%), while parking areas were rated as good (47.31%), and directional signage was deemed good (45.16%). Reported challenges included mobility issues (38.71%), long waiting periods (25.27%), cost of care (13.44%), and stigma (12.37%). Overall satisfaction reported was low (32.26%). Respondents aged 90 and above were less likely to be satisfied with health facilities as compared with those aged 60-69 (AOR=0.12; CI=0.17–0.82). Those with NHIS coverage were more likely to be satisfied with health facilities as compared with those without coverage (AOR=4.29; CI=1.01–18.09).
Conclusion: The study revealed several deficiencies in the state of healthcare infrastructure for older adults. Relevant stakeholders must make an effort to prioritize improving health facilities for better accessibility and usability for the aged.
